Have you ever had something valuable stolen from you? It leaves you with a sick feeling and a feeling of exposure different than anything else. We're all aware that there are criminals and thieves that live among us. We lock our cars and put in antitheft devices on them. We secure our homes and install alarms. Powerboats require the same level of protection. Powerboats are a lot more vulnerable to theft than are cars and much more easily entered than homes.
You might want to look at installing an alarm on your powerboat whether it is parked in your drive or your garage or at a marina. You can install a simple trailer lock in the hopes of deterring thieves, however, a determined powerboat thief won’t be stopped with just a trailer lock.
You can install an alarm system on the new powerboat that you bought. Be aware, however, that some of these alarm systems can be set off easily. Even gentle waves can trigger them and this will certainly not keep you in the good graces of the owners of neighboring boats owners.
There are a number of types of alarm systems. One is the closed loop sensor which is placed on the hatch or on other expensive equipment. When the hatch is opened or equipment is moved, the alarm is sounded. Another is the open circuit alarm and it works much the same way as the closed loop sensor. It only sounds the alarm when the power to the alarm is cut off. There are GPS based systems that will sound an alarm is the vessel is moved.
Any alarm systems will work to help deter thieves but due diligence is still required to be certain that the alarms are set when you don’t have both eyeballs trained on your powerboat.
